AETHORRA
The Kingdom of Aldmere

Aldmeri

1. How It Sounds

Plain and unhurried. Stress always falls on the first syllable. Words end hard, often in -nd, -ld, -rth, -th or -ck. The Southdowns roll their r's; Hethlend clips them.

Letters Sound Example
a as in hat tharl (bread)
e as in bed heldor (lord)
i as in sit silden (moon)
o as in hot yorn (old)
u as in put uth (the)
ee as in see neeth (no)
oo as in moon hoowith (gold)
ai as in rain taisat (stone)
ow as in cow ownirn (ash tree)
oa as in boat oam (one)
th as in thin hethrin (king)
sh as in ship esh (I)
ch as in church chomark (harrow)
c, k, ck always hard, like k cund (give), kemed (hill), bodack (back)
g always hard, as in get gleor (sun)
hw a breathy w; only in question words hwar (where)
y as in yes yeth (yes)
ng as in sing blomeng (want)

Spelling rule. The hard k sound is written c before a, o, u, l and r; k before e and i; and ck at the end of a word after a short vowel. So cund, kemed, bodack.

Question words all begin with hw-: hwod (what), hwim (who), hwil (which), hwar (where), hwon (when), hwai (why), hwu (how). No other word does, so a listener always knows a question is coming.

2. How It Works

Pronoun Subject Object (-um) Owner (-ey)
I esh eshum eshey
you, friend thav thavum thavey
you, stranger yoth yothum yothey
he hosk hoskum hoskey
she shom shomum shomey
it ith ithum ithey
we wost wostum wostey
they thel thelum theley

Counting is base ten, with a zero (from Zarvand, through Caelvenne's banks). Ones: oam, dwe, sael, harn, pilk, sesk, vurn, lorth, nirn, dask. Tens are built: dwedask (twenty, "two-ten"), saeldask (thirty). Teens put the ten first: dask oam (eleven), dask dwe (twelve). Then murd (hundred) and shas (thousand). 1146 is oam shas, oam murd, harndask sesk.

Names. Aldmeri names are built from two word-parts, as most old names are. Royal names begin with Heth- (from hethrin, king). Women's names often end in -ith. Commoners have one short name and add their village. Place names are shortened compounds: Hethlend is hethriney slalend, the king's bridge.
