AETHORRA
The Hrodvald Clanholds

Hrodvaldr

1. How It Sounds

Loud, rough and rhythmic, with hard k's and g's, rolled r's, and long vowels that swing. Stress falls on the first syllable, with a second beat on the third, so that sentences fall naturally into verse, which is why the hrinduk (the saga-keepers) exist. Half the consonants are dropped when shouting into wind, and the language assumes wind. The Deep Cold speak it in whispers, which the other clans find unsettling.

Letters Sound Example
a, e, i, o, u short, as in father, bed, sit, hot, put nugag (cold)
á, ó, ú long: ah, oh, oo, held hjúld (who)
ey, au as in they, how veyr (he)
th as in thin theg (none)
r rolled grer (river)
hr, hl a breathed r or l hlurd (ten)
j as y in yes jir (no)
hj a breathed y; question words only hjir (where)

Question words all begin with hj-: hjynd (what), hjúld (who), hje (which), hjir (where), hjork (when), hjof (why), hjún (how). No other word does.

2. How It Works

Counting: kurn, frurd, fyng, hrur, buld, kef, suf, freld, rild, hlurd (one to ten). frurdhlurd (twenty, "two-ten"); hrel (hundred; in the old count, the long hundred of 120); theyl (thousand).

Names. Given name, then a by-name earned or inherited, in English for readers: Selra Stormbrand, Kruman Ironjaw, Statha the Far-Seer, Sauld Half-Sung, Golen No-Clan. Given names are words, clipped: Selra from selthar (storm), Kruman (iron), Statha from statan (secret). Women's names usually end in a vowel (Selra, Thuba, Anoga); men's end hard (Kruman, Mulrik, Fevar). A child has only a given name until the Reldith agrees on the by-name, which can take fifty years. Clan-names come from the founder or from a word: Stormbrand, Ironjaw, Barerk (whale), Durtha (wolf), Nugag (cold), Fevur (axe).

8. The Storm-Runes

Both are replaced. 23 runes for the sounds above: a · e · i · o · u · y · b · d · f · g · h · j · k · l · m · n · r · s · t · v · th · ey · au. A long vowel (á, ó, ú) is its short rune with a notch. Each rune is named for a Hrodvaldr word that starts with its sound: s is surku (friend), k is kúbeld (child), b is balnas (world), f is falis (farmer), h is heljast (son), d is draksern (man), and so on. The tally numbers (fives, scores and the long hundred of 120) stay as they are.
