Tharax

Tharaxi

1. How It Sounds

Short, hard and flat. Most words are one syllable; almost none are more than two. Stress falls on the last syllable. The Tharaxi speak without music and in as few words as possible: a sentence is usually a verb and one noun, and everything else is a look.

Letters Sound Example
a as in father krax (hold)
e as in bed nex (yes)
i as in machine psin (who)
o as in note nokh (no)
u as in rule turakh (king)
ai as in aisle taisk (eye)
ei as in eight keix (that)
ou as in soup oux (it)
k always hard kharn (wall)
kh a harsh h at the back of the throat khox (have)
th as in thin thour (lake)
ph a breathy p, close to f phex (five)
x as in box (ks) mox (we)
ps both sounds; only in question words psar (where)
g always hard gyr (he)

Question words all begin with ps-: psor (what), psin (who), psir (which), psar (where), psen (when), psei (why), psum (how). No other word does.

Field-talk. The Bound speak Tharaxi with softer vowels and some borrowed words. The Equals call it dasthax, "field-talk," and a Phymon who slips into it is mocked for a year.

2. How It Works

Pronoun Doer Done to (-ot) Owner (-ik)
I eim eimot eimik
you tyx tyxot tyxik
he gyr gyrot gyrik
she nir nirot nirik
it oux ouxot ouxik
we mox moxot moxik
they torx torxot torxik

Counting. kaim, dru, tirk, pesk, phex, skem, zirk, gour, nysk, dakt (one to ten). Tens are built: drudakt (twenty, "two-ten"), tirkdakt (thirty). Then skix (hundred) and sath (thousand). Written Tharaxi still uses the additive Spearmarks numerals.

Names. An Equal has one given name built from a word: men's names end in -or, women's in -ys. Royals add their line, which ends in -id: Deneskid (of the Eagle), Sastorid (of the Spear). Other Equals add their father's or house's name with the owner ending -ik: Sirtys Gonamik, Sirtys of Gonam. The Bound are given plain field-names by their overseers (Tandox, "harvest"); their own names are never said in front of an Equal.
