Tzalan
1. How It Sounds
Quick and bright, with a catch in the throat. Tzalan is tonal, like Kaishoni, though the two are unrelated: every syllable is high (marked á), low (à) or mid (no mark), and the tone changes the word. The marks are for learners; names in English text drop them (Sutzam, not Sutzàm). The catch (') is a stop in the throat, as in the middle of uh-oh. The river villages speak slowly and drop the catch; Sutzam's priests speak fast and exaggerate it, which is how you tell whose side a speaker is on.

Question words all begin with nh-: nholi' (what), nhicho (who), nhemàs (which), nhawel (where), nhuncha (when), nhènó (why), nhútzo' (how). No other word does.
2. How It Works
- Word order is verb, object, subject: Chitzalak lákchán xal ("saw jaguar I": I saw a jaguar).
- No gender, no "the," no "a," no "is." One word, tzóx, means he, she and it.
- Plurals repeat the first syllable: hebú, hèhebú (tree, trees).
- Owners go in front as a prefix clipped from the pronoun: xa'-sítzo (my house), tza'-sítzo (your house).
- Verbs add -ak for a finished act (-k after a vowel) and -om for one still to come (-m after a vowel). Not is kax, before the verb.
- The Sun is never "you." One speaks to the Sun-Speaker as Lónok xemù, "the Sun hears," and says what one has to say to the air.
Counting: bix, chútz, xetz, xax, tzil, lexo', kíx, hùkon, payil, tzipún (one to ten). chútz-tzipún (twenty, "two-ten"); síxo (hundred); tzol (thousand).
Names. Names are plain words, and a child keeps its birth-name until it earns a second one: Ixatl is not a Tzalan name at all but a title the Serpent Clans gave him in the old speech, and it passes both checks, so it stays. The river elder is Chelpan (from chelpan, canoe), and Ixatl's ward is Kaltzi ("dart," from kaltzi). English titles stay: Sun-Speaker, elder, the Sun's arrow.
