The Long Rampart

A great wall running 1,100 miles along Kaishon's western border, facing the Grass Sea. Emperor Tokrai Meksi began it in 341 after steppe raiders sacked Sorogei; the Charnazin of Tontanor attacked the unfinished wall for nine years (461–470) and Kaishon lost a hundred thousand conscripts, held, and learned to build the repeating crossbow. It was completed in 488, from the Frostmarch to the edge of the Verdant Deep, and Emperor Tokrai Tegoi died six days after walking its length; the conscripts say the wall grew north on its own and killed him for calling it done. After the Barerk Raid of 763 its northern forts were extended to the sea. General Dezau Honmyan, twenty-six years on the wall, commands it with two hundred thousand men, signal kites and repeating crossbows, and in 1146 the Cherüsh Horde is testing it.
