The Moot Hall

The Moot hall at Hethlend is where Aldmere's Moot of great lords and burgher-reeves makes the kingdom's law. Weapons have been banned from it since 996, when a Westmarch baron stabbed King Hethlarn I on its floor. The clerks say a burgher-reeve of Chomtholk still sleeps beneath it and that the Moot's authority ends if he wakes, so they knock three times on the floor before every session. Moot owls are said to roost above it, and on Moot day every town bakes a loaf for the hall, which the poorest man present cuts. In 1146 Prince Hethbael stood here to ask why Aldmere still pays interest on a loan made in 511.
