The Greenwarden

The Greenwarden is the ancient temperate rainforest of the west coast, where it rains most days and warden redwoods, some three thousand years old and a hundred feet across, are hollowed into houses. It belongs to the Waheli, about thirty thousand strong, who kill trespassers without warning and hold that the oldest trees are the Builders of the Age of Ruins asleep. Castavar wants the redwoods for masts, and both Castavar and Aldmere covet its timber. Its creatures include the warden elk, the climbing black bear, the root boar, the hollow marten, the stag-cat the Waheli never hunt, and the green jay that warns the whole forest of intruders. In its deepest northern marsh, where the Circle does not go, live the Bark-Singers, heretics expelled a century ago for wanting to wake the sleepers.
