The Jade Dominion of Kaishon

The largest of the seven great powers: some fourteen million people, a standing army of 400,000 (mostly conscripts), the largest engineering corps on Aethorra, and walls nobody has ever breached. It was founded in 248 R., when Emperor Dezau Kokdau of the northern throne conquered the other two of the Three Thrones of the East; he held the first examinations for office in 260, and the Tokrai dynasty has ruled since Tokrai Meksi in 341. Officials are chosen by examination, an emperor rules under the Mandate of Merit, and since the Reasoned Purge of 588–596 the state has been officially atheist under the Doctrine of Ordered Reason, though the countryside still feeds the Unseen Kin. Kaishon makes silk, porcelain, tea, rice, paper, lacquerware, and iron and steel in huge quantities, and pays in the gold mihomau and silver tsinkya, with paper notes that are worthless abroad. In 1146 Emperor Tokrai Shaiku is dying and rarely seen, Grand Chancellor Seiro Makok holds the seals, the ministers refuse to accept the Emperor's daughter, Princess Seitotai, and the Cherüsh Horde is testing the Long Rampart.
